While visiting my parents in Henderson, KY over the holidays, we encountered the leg lamp from the movie The Christmas Story. On Christmas Eve we drove around looking at the beautiful Christmas lights on people’s homes. We saw multi-colored lights to a whole house decked out with blue lights. They were all pretty. It’s amazing how Christmas lights get you in the spirit. My dad drove down a street and there it was; the leg lamp shining brightly in a store front window. It looked exactly like the one in the movie. We never laughed so hard in our lives because my parents thought another lamp post down that street was the leg lamp. They hadn’t seen the movie. Once we got home, we turned on the tube. Guess what was on the T.V. when we got home? You guessed it: The Christmas Story! We watched it and laughed again at the part where the dad recieves the leg lamp in a huge pine box.

That’s my brother’s Christmas tradition – watching that stinking movie every year all day long!

And it was on allll day long. I’ve heard of marathons like “What Not to Wear” marathons or “Hannah Montana” marathons, but those are different episodes. This was the same movie over and over. I must confess I’ve never watched the whole thing. I’ve seen the infamous tongue on the pole part and the changing the tire and the leg lamp. How funny that y’all saw that same leg lamp! And laughing hard with the family . . . what could be better.

That storefront is the former home of Richardson’s Appliances. What a story Jack Richardson was the lonliest guy in town for years! He was the Maytag Repairman. He had nothing to do since Maytay washers and dryers were SO dependable.

He had a long standing commercial that ran on local radio WSON for years! I can almost do that commerical by heart since it was so catchy.

One day however he did have to fix a Maytag. When he went to fix it, he found out it was just out of gas!
